In the heart of the small, peaceful island of Silba — a car-free island where life moves slowly and the sea whispers stories older than dry-stone walls — stands the Toreta. More than just a viewpoint, it is a symbol of love, longing, and maritime honour.

For centuries, Silba was an island of sailors, shipowners, and captains. During the age of sailing ships, especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, the island lived by the sea — through navigation, trade, and the skill of people who knew how to read the wind and the horizon.

According to legend, long ago a young captain, Petar Marinić, loved Silba — and a young woman named Antonija — so deeply that he promised to build a tower in a garden, a place from which she would look out to the open sea and wait for his return from distant voyages. When he set sail, a tower rose among olive trees and jasmine — a lighthouse of promise and a quiet message: “I will return.”

Today, the Toreta still preserves that island romance. It is a place where sky meets sea, where sunsets awaken the quietest thoughts, and where the view follows the distant routes along which Silba’s captains once sailed — and always returned.
