Veli Rat & “Pape”

Wind, the scent of pines and a sunset you’ll remember

If you’re looking for sailing that feels like a postcard, the Veli Rat Lighthouse on Dugi Otok is a perfect choice. It’s surrounded by dense pine forest and bays with pebble beaches, and from the lighthouse tower—around 40 m high—you’ll enjoy a spectacular view of the open sea.

The best way to arrive is by boat. Moor to one of the buoys in Pantera Bay and enjoy an unhurried visit: swimming in crystal-clear water, a walk through fragrant pine woods, and a sunset that’s truly special here—with no islands on the horizon.

The place has an extra charm thanks to a local legend: according to the story, thousands of egg yolks were mixed into the mortar of the lighthouse’s thick walls to help the building withstand salt and strong winds. In the large paved courtyard you’ll also find the small votive Chapel of St Nicholas, where services are still occasionally held.

For extra comfort, there’s also a campsite with a restaurant nearby. The lighthouse was built in 1849—and it still has that “good energy” that keeps people coming back.
